Secondary Schools
More often than not schools struggle with how to deal with the subject of sexuality, homophobic/transphobic bullying and language. Because some schools lack confidence in dealing with this issue it can sometimes get left out of PSHE lessons. Both the Equality Act 2010 and Ofsted now have an expectation on schools to deliver lessons which promote positive relationships between protected groups. It also seeks to eliminate discrimination and promote equality.
Our program for schools focuses on eliminating stereotypes, challenging the use of homophobic language. It ties in with the Key Stage Three and Four Objectives:
- Personal identities
- Understanding that identity is affected by a range of factors, including a positive sense of self
- Recognising that the way in which personal qualities, attitudes, skills and achievements are evaluated affects confidence and self-esteem
- Understanding that self-esteem can change with personal circumstances, such as those associated with family and friendships, achievements and employment
- Diversity
- Appreciating that, in our communities, there are similarities as well as differences between people of different race, religion, culture, ability or disability, gender, age or sexual orientation
- Understanding that all forms of prejudice and discrimination must be challenged at every level in our lives
- Identities and diversity: living together in the UK
- Appreciating that identities are complex, can change over time and are informed by different understandings of what it means to be a citizen in the UK
- Exploring the diverse national, regional, ethnic and religious cultures, groups and communities in the UK and the connections between them
We work alongside students to discover different diversities. We talk about the use of language and how a well intended comment can have negative impacts on others. We challenge stereotypes and explore how they can sometimes prevent young LGBT people from reaching their full potential. Looking at ways in which to make LGBT young people feel valued and recognised is important in this vital time of development.
We can provide bespoke workshops for your students. We will cover:
- Context of language
- Anti-bullying campaigns
- Positive and negative media influence
- Encourage open discussion
- Empower students to be active citizens and promote equality
- Providing examples of LGBT role models
- Sign posting and further support
FEEDBACK....
"Sessions in tutor time went well with positive feedback from both students and teachers. Students found that the assemblies were interesting and well delivered. They thought that Dan was very charismatic and open. Overall we are very pleased with the week and the combined activities." - Colchester Academy
"We have really begun to get the PSE programme up and running this year and Dan Bunker has played a key role in our upper school SRE aspect. The students have a very narrow minded and at times bigoted attitude at times and Dan's frank, no nonsense yet light and humorous approach is just right to challenging their pre conceptions.” - St Helena School
